HEASC Sustainability Fellows

The Sustainability Fellows are listed below with a description of their projects. New Fellows are accepted on a quarterly basis as needed.

2014-2015

  • Dr. Cushing is HEASC's Fellow for the initiative entitled of Latinos for a Sustainable Future. In collaboration with a group at her university, she will:
    • Develop a narrative connecting the values of Latino cultures and sustainability,
    • Compile a list of resources for use on campuses (some resources are already gathered),
    • Help write articles and digital messages to disseminate this information throughout higher education.  
  • Erin Stanforth - Sustainabilty Manager, Portland Community College
    • Sustainability in job performance evaluations, including examples and a call to action
    • Sustainable Purchasing, including a database of RFP language and green guides related to sustainability, as well as “green guides” for purchasing. 
    • Sustainability presence in student government and opportunities to catalyze more engagement
  • Debra Kaye Holman, PhD - School of Global Environmental Sustainability, Colorado State University

  • Eileen Joseph - Director of Advancement, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo

Project: Disseminating information on funding sustainability on campuses and supporting professional development in this area.

  • Charles Prince  - Site Manager, Jumpstart For Young Children, LLC – Office of the Dean, Howard University

Project: Improving education for sustainability within curricular and co-curricular activities by connecting HEASC associations and their members to the resources and supporting ongoing initiatives developed by “Sustainability Improves Student Learning”, the Disciplinary Associations Network for Sustainability, and AASCU’s civic engagement work.

  • Alicia Sprow - Environmental Sustainability Coordinator, Alvernia University

          Project: Assessment for sustainability learning outcomes.

  • Douglas Goodstein - Residence Hall Director, University of Connecticut

Project:  Multi-pronged project will contribute to a communications plan for sustainability in student affairs, enhance the integration of sustainability into standards, create support and content for professional development training in sustainability for higher education professionals, and move forward the assessment and research efforts related to sustainability learning and behavior change.

  • Eileen Joseph - Director of Advancement, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo

Project: A white paper that examines the shifting role of the university and college advancement office in a national trend toward advancing sustainability in higher education and presents a range of ideas in support of a more whole-system approach to the conservation, alignment and development of resources in support of more sustainable institutions.

  • Erin Stanforth - Sustainabilty Manager, Portland Community College

Project: The creation of a supply chain-specific greenhouse gas inventory guidebook for higher educational institutions to use. Portland Community College will be used as a case study the guidebook.  Once finished the guidebook will be disseminated via HEASC member associations to higher education institutions for their use.

  • Sean Williamson - Faculty Research Assistant, University of Maryland

Project 1:  Develop an infographic that highlights the HEASC associations, the areas of expertise, and the many functions they perform to advance sustainability.
Project 2:  Develop an infographic that captures why sustainability in higher education is important, which might be coupled with the white paper AASHE is putting together. This will be a later stage project.
Project 3: Compile examples and best practices for campus-community collaborations that advance sustainability and communicating findings to HEASC members.
